Talking to people, asking the right questions and listening to what they are saying is what it is all about but for what purpose? What is the role of politicians at the local level?
I believe that the role is to act as an advocate for the constituency with the aim of maintaining and building thriving and robust communities. I believe that the knowledge, energy and commitment to do this is already there – it just needs to be located, motivated and then tapped.
The role of politicians is to listen to their communities, to enable and to use their platform to promote the interests of their constituency and the people who live, work and spend time there. It is not just about turning up for the photo-opportunity and smiling!
