Listening to Evidence

Politicians are not, and should not be expected to be experts on all of the issues that they encounter, recognising where there are deficiencies, asking the right people the right questions and listening to their answers is fundamental to my approach.

As well as the vital role played by listening to communities there is also an equally important role for listening to experts. I am committed to an evidence-led approach to politics and policy-making and will argue for the adoption of this approach at all times.

In a nutshell it means that policy decisions that will affect peoples lives should be based on rigorous research and analysis, as opposed to the twin evils of intransigent ideology and flip-flopping focus group populism that dominate current policy-making.

This commitment is born out of a belief in research and the scientific method and relates closely to my ideas around meaningful consultation outlined on the Talking to People page.
